Camera placement in the company: blind spots and useful frame

The blind spot is not always outside the image, as the camera can cover a location and still not capture the detail needed to explain the event. This article shows how to plan the arrangement of cameras in the company: translate the monitoring purpose into the task of each camera, detect permanent and variable obstacles and check the system before acceptance.

The blind spot isn't always outside the picture

The most obvious blind spot is the place that no camera covers, but in practice, the visible zone from which the necessary information cannot be obtained is equally important.

A character can be in the frame but take up too little space, a car can block an entrance, and strong light can turn details into a dark silhouette. Each of these cases means that monitoring is not fulfilling the task, even though the image formally exists.

Therefore, the assessment of layout should not end with checking whether the entire room or area can be seen, because it is also necessary to determine what can be recognised and under what conditions.

One camera, one main task

Planning starts with writing down the goal for each point so that the camera doesn't try to simultaneously show the entire object and capture detail in a distant part.

These goals may require different points because a wide image spreads the available detail over a larger scene, while a narrower frame shows less terrain but better highlights the selected area.

By assigning one main task to the camera, it is easier to evaluate its effectiveness later, because the reception then answers a specific question, not a general "can you see anything?"

Field of view is a compromise

Angle of view is not a parameter that should be maximized because a wider frame always means that the same image covers a larger scene.

The choice of lens should depend on the width of the observed area, the distance from the scene of the event, the expected detail and lighting conditions. Without this information, the data sheet will not tell you whether the camera is correct, even if the manufacturer provides all the parameters.

When designing the frame, it is worth using the preview from the planned installation site, because the drawing will not show the actual impact of the column, recess, eaves or equipment elements.

A person's route is more important than a single point

Monitoring should make it possible to track an event between zones, therefore the placement of cameras is also assessed along typical entry, exit, transit and goods transfer routes.

If a person disappears between two frames, there is a gap where it is not known where they went or what they did, although both ends of the route remain visible. The solution may be a change in the direction of the existing camera, a different division of tasks or an additional point, but the decision should result from the test, not from the throw itself.

Overlapping frames makes sense where it ensures continuity of observation, but should not lead to repeated recording of the same empty space at the expense of important areas.

Fixed and variable obstacles

Structural elements such as columns, corners, hoods and shelving can be considered during design, but a greater challenge is obstacles that only arise during normal operation.

A parked car, a delivery left at the dock, growing vegetation or a changed storage arrangement can obscure an area that was visible during pickup. When analysing the environment, you need to ask not only about the current state, but also about typical traffic and planned changes.

A camera observing the space above the shelves may give the correct image of an empty hall, and when the warehouse is full, lose the view of the level where people are working.

Mounting height and direction

Mounting high protects the device from accidental damage, but may change the perspective so that the image mainly shows the tops of heads instead of useful features of the characters.

In turn, the camera placed lower provides a more favourable angle for selected tasks, although it requires an assessment of the risk of manipulation and the ability to safely route the cable. When choosing an altitude, you need to reconcile physical resistance with what is to be recorded, and not automatically choose the highest available point.

The installation direction should also take into account windows, gates and lamps, because strong background light can strip the silhouette of details exactly in the place that was supposed to be the most important.

Day and night means two pickups

Daytime shots can become unusable after dark when the illuminator reflects off a nearby surface, insects appear near the device, or the lamp changes exposure when it moves.

Therefore, each point must be tested in real night conditions, following the same route that was tested during the day. The problem of quality after dark is described separately in the article about camera image at nightto avoid mixing frame selection with lighting diagnostics.

Observation range and zone masking

The camera may technically cover more than is needed for its stated purpose, but this does not mean that all available area should remain in the recording.

Privacy mask allows you to cover a selected part of the image, while the detection zone only decides from which area events and notifications should come. The distinction is important because turning off alarms from part of the frame does not remove it from the recording itself.

When determining the scope of observation, you need to combine the technical decision with the legal assessment of a specific facility, and upon receipt, check whether the masks and camera directions correspond to the approved arrangements.

How to determine the location of cameras in the company

  1. Compare each camera's preview with the task saved for it.
  2. Follow typical routes of people and vehicles, observing places of loss of continuity.
  3. Introduce common obstacles into the scene, such as a vehicle, merchandise, or an open door.
  4. Repeat the test in difficult daylight and at dusk.
  5. Check that privacy masks cover the correct portions.
  6. Record the direction, task and range of each camera in the documentation.

When accepting a system according to this list, the company verifies the usability of the material, and not only the presence of the image on the monitor.

Dead spots also occur after receipt

The environment changes after implementation, so the review should take place after reconstruction, change in storage method, installation of a new shelter, change in lighting or other modification affecting the staff.

Documentation indicating the purpose of each camera then allows you to quickly recognise whether a change has violated the system's purpose, rather than reproducing the original assumptions from memory.
