Bitdefender GravityZone in a business: editions, preparation and common mistakes

Bitdefender GravityZone enables central management of protection for supported devices, policies and alerts. The value of a deployment depends on choosing the right licence, well-thought-out policies and who responds to alerts.

In small businesses, each computer often has a different antivirus program, some with an expired licence, and nobody knows on which devices protection is actually working. Bitdefender GravityZone is a platform for managing the protection of endpoints and servers. The central console lets you roll out policies, check agent status, run tasks and analyse reported events without configuring each computer separately.

It is not, however, a single fixed set of features. The availability of modules depends on the edition, licence type, operating system and configuration. Before you buy, compare the manufacturer's current feature table with your company's requirements.

How GravityZone differs from consumer antivirus

The most important difference concerns fleet management. In the business console, the administrator can, among other things:

  • group devices and assign them different policies;
  • control the security status and agent communication;
  • manage scans, exceptions and selected settings;
  • receive alerts and create summary reports;
  • perform selected remote actions;
  • manage licence allocation.

The scope of operations varies between Windows, macOS and Linux. The function visible in the sales material may not be available on every type of device.

GravityZone modules and editions to check before you buy

Bitdefender's documentation separates the standard features of individual GravityZone products from add-ons that may require a separate licence or an additional fee. This applies, among others, to areas such as:

  • malware protection and behaviour analysis;
  • web content and device control;
  • Network Attack Defense;
  • Risk Management;
  • Patch Management;
  • Full Disk Encryption;
  • EDR, XDR and MDR services;
  • Sandbox Analyzer and HyperDetect.

Edition names and content may change. They are decisive current function table GravityZone, the commercial offer and licence terms.

Ransomware Mitigation in GravityZone vs backup

Bitdefender describes Ransomware Mitigation as a feature that detects unusual encryption attempts, blocks the process and helps restore files from copies created by the protection mechanism. According to the documentation, the feature requires the Advanced Threat Control and Antimalware modules in detection and blocking mode, and the file copies are available for a maximum of 30 days.

This mechanism should not be treated as a company backup. A separate backup system should have a defined scope, retention, separation, monitoring and restore tests in line with the RPO (how much data the company can lose) and RTO (how quickly it needs to be restored) requirements. We describe this in our article on data backup in the company.

What the managed GravityZone service includes

In the MSP (managed service provider) model, the provider manages the licence and console on the customer's behalf. We agree our scope in the quote and contract. It may include:

  • inventory of supported devices and licence selection;
  • preparation of groups and policies;
  • implementing agents and checking their communication;
  • alert configuration and escalation paths;
  • event handling at agreed hours and scope;
  • protection status reporting;
  • managing changes in the number of protected devices;
  • configuration documentation.

The term "managed service" on its own does not define the response time or the scope of incident analysis. These must follow from the contract. We are a Bitdefender Partner, and we describe the deployment and maintenance of this platform, with prices, on the page Bitdefender GravityZone: deployment and ongoing support. Endpoint protection can also be covered by ongoing IT support.

How to prepare a GravityZone deployment in your business

1. Inventory and compliance

Establish the operating systems, their versions, the role of each device, the available resources and any existing security software. Agent requirements and supported features are checked against the manufacturer's current documentation.

2. Licence selection

The list of requirements should come before choosing an edition. Mark separately the features that are essential, those that are optional and those already provided by other tools, so that you don't buy overlapping mechanisms without a plan for running them.

3. Draft policies

Servers, office stations and mobile computers may require different settings. Exceptions should have an owner, a justification, and a review deadline. A policy that is too restrictive may disrupt work, while a policy that is too lenient will miss out on protection opportunities.

4. Pilot

First we deploy the agent on a representative group of devices. The pilot should check application compatibility, load, updates, communication with the console, alerts and the procedure for rolling back the change.

5. Controlled implementation

Once the pilot is approved, devices can be added in stages. The distribution method depends on the environment, such as a device management system, domain, or installation package.

6. Monitoring and maintenance

After installation, you need to determine who reviews alerts, how quickly they classify them, which events reach the client and how devices are operated without contact with the console. A periodic review of policies, exceptions and licence usage is also needed.

GravityZone or Microsoft Defender for Business

It is impossible to reliably indicate a better product without specifying the licence and management method. Microsoft Defender for Business may be a good fit for an environment using Microsoft 365, Intune, and Entra ID. GravityZone may suit an organisation that wants to manage cross-platform protection in the Bitdefender console or use MSP support.

Besides the effectiveness of protection, the comparison should also take into account:

  • supported systems and features required on each;
  • integration with identity, devices and other tools;
  • competences of people analysing alerts;
  • how to respond and collect evidence;
  • cost of licence, implementation and maintenance;
  • ability to export data when changing the solution.

Does GravityZone ensure compliance with NIS2 or GDPR

No. The platform may support selected technical measures, event logging and risk mitigation, but compliance is about the entire organisation, processes and security adequacy. It requires management of risk, access, incidents, business continuity, suppliers, training and documentation, among other things.

The most common mistakes when deploying GravityZone

  • edit selection based on name without checking the function table;
  • implementation on all devices without piloting;
  • leaving the default policy without needs analysis;
  • missing alert owner and escalation path;
  • treating endpoint protection as a backup replacement;
  • no control over devices that have stopped communicating with the console;
  • maintaining exceptions without justification or review date.

What determines the value of a GravityZone deployment

GravityZone gives you a central point for managing protection, but the value of a deployment depends on the right licence, policies, monitoring and response to alerts. The software is one layer of security, alongside a well-organised network, accounts and backups. We deploy workstation and server protection as part of our cybersecurity for businesses.
